In Deoghar, Jharkhand, stands the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga, also lovingly called Baba Baidyanath Dham by devotees. This shrine carries a name that means the Lord who heals, the divine physician.
FACT: TWO SACRED DISTINCTIONS IN ONE
Vaidyanath holds a rare double honour. It is counted both among the twelve Jyotirlingas and among the Shakti Peethas, sacred sites where, according to legend, a part of Goddess Sati's body fell. Here, it is believed her heart fell, making the site sacred to both Shiva and Shakti worship.
The Story of Vaidyanath
MYTH: THE DEMON KING OUTWITTED BY A CHILD
According to legend, the demon king Ravana once performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva, offering his own heads one by one in devotion. Moved by this extreme dedication, Shiva appeared and healed Ravana's wounds, restoring his heads, and granted him a boon. Ravana asked for the Atma Linga, a personal form of Shiva, to take back with him to Lanka, believing it would make his kingdom invincible. Shiva agreed, but placed one condition: the lingam must never be set down on the ground before reaching Lanka, or it would remain fixed at that very spot forever.
The gods, worried about the power this would give Ravana, asked young Lord Ganesha for help. As Ravana neared Deoghar, Ganesha, disguised as a young boy, offered to hold the lingam while Ravana attended to an urgent call of nature. After a long wait, Ganesha simply placed the lingam on the ground, and it became permanently fixed there, becoming the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga.
A Yatra of Bare Feet and Ganga Water
During the holy month of Shravan, Vaidyanath becomes the destination for one of India's largest annual pilgrimages, the Kanwar Yatra. Lakhs of devotees, known as Kanwariyas, walk barefoot from Sultanganj, about 105 kilometres away, carrying pots of sacred water from the Ganga on decorated shoulder poles, to offer it here as a Jalabhishek on the lingam.
FACT: A JOURNEY OF DEVOTION, NOT CONVENIENCE
Kanwariyas deliberately avoid setting their water pots down on the ground during the entire journey, believing this would break the sanctity of the offering, walking in relay teams so the pot is always carried or held aloft.
रावणेन तपस्तप्तं शिरश्छेदैर्महात्मना ।
तुष्टः शिवो वरं दत्त्वा वैद्यनाथः प्रतिष्ठितः ॥
Transliteration: Raavanena tapas taptam, shirash-chhedair mahaat-manaa | Tushtah Shivo varam dattvaa, Vaidyanaathah pratishthitah ||
Meaning: The great-souled Ravana performed severe penance, offering his own heads one by one. Pleased by this, Shiva granted him a boon. And from this event, Shiva came to be established as Vaidyanath - the divine physician who healed Ravana's wounds.

Transliteration: Vaidyanaatham Mahaadevam, roga-naashaaya poojayet | Darshanaat sparshanaad dhyaanaat, sarva-paapaiH pramuchyate ||
Meaning: Worship Lord Mahadeva as Vaidyanath for the destruction of all disease. By His darshan, by His touch, or even by meditating upon Him, one is freed from all sins and suffering.

TIP FOR SENIOR PILGRIMS
During the Shravan month, lakhs of Kanwariyas make the town extremely crowded. Senior pilgrims are best advised to plan their visit outside this period for a peaceful darshan.
