Shirdi Sai Baba - Fact Check: True or False
ॐ साईं राम - What is true, what is false, what needs context
Common claims, rumours and misconceptions about Sai Baba - examined honestly using the Sai Satcharita, the Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust records and verified historical sources.
This is Page 4 of the Shirdi Sai Baba complete guide. Every big pilgrimage has rumours, wrong facts and debates. Shirdi has more than most, because Sai Baba never told anyone about his birth or religion. Here we check common claims one by one and mark them as true, false, partly true or needing context. Our sources are the Shri Sai Satcharita, the official Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust website, Wikipedia (with its academic sources) and trusted news reports.
| How to read this page | |
|---|---|
| TRUE | Verified from the Sai Satcharita, the official Sansthan records or confirmed historical evidence. |
| FALSE | Contradicted by the Sai Satcharita, the Sansthan records or clear historical evidence. |
| PARTIALLY TRUE | Contains some truth but is incomplete, taken out of context or mixed with inaccuracy. |
| NEEDS CONTEXT | A genuinely contested or debated point where reasonable people disagree - presented with all sides. |
Section 1: Baba's Identity and Origins
पहचान और उत्पत्ति
True. Baba never told anyone his birth name, birthplace or family. The Sai Satcharita, the main book on his life, does not give these details either. The Sansthan also does not give an official birth date. Any claim to "know" Baba's exact birth date, birthplace or family should be treated with care.
Source: Shri Sai Satcharita, Chapter 1; Wikipedia - Sai Baba of Shirdi (citing Rigopoulos 1993 and academic biographies).
The year 1838 is only an estimate. It comes from the Satcharita, which says Baba looked about sixteen when he was first seen in Shirdi (around 1854). Pathri (in Parbhani district) as his birthplace comes from later writers and from Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, who claimed to be Shirdi Sai Baba's rebirth. Baba himself never confirmed it, and the Sai Satcharita does not name any birthplace. Bottom line: around 1838 is the common estimate; Pathri is a claim, not a proven fact.
Both claims are incomplete. Sai Baba followed both Hindu and Muslim ways, and never said he belonged to only one. He lived in a mosque but called it Dwarkamai. He said "Allah Malik", and also allowed Hindu aarti and puja to be done to him. He dressed like a Muslim fakir, and at first some Hindu villagers were unhappy about this. Over time both communities loved him. Wikipedia, quoting scholars, notes that he refused to identify with one religion over the other. Baba's own answer was three words: Sabka Malik Ek.
These are two different people. Shirdi Sai Baba (c.1838-1918) lived in Shirdi, Maharashtra. Sathya Sai Baba (1926-2011) was born in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, and claimed to be the rebirth of Shirdi Sai Baba. The Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust in Shirdi is fully separate from the Sathya Sai organisations. When you visit Shirdi, you visit the shrine of Shirdi Sai Baba. Puttaparthi is a different pilgrimage.

Section 2: The Temple, Practices and Online Booking
मंदिर, पद्धतियां और बुकिंग
True. The Dhuni (sacred fire) that Baba kept burning in Dwarkamai is still kept burning by the Sansthan. The official daily programme lists a Dhuni Pooja with rice and ghee at 11:30 AM every day at Dwarkamai. The Udi (sacred ash) given at Shirdi comes from this Dhuni.
True. The Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust has explicitly and publicly warned devotees about fake websites claiming to offer Shirdi bookings. The official website states: "The only official websites are www.sai.org.in and https://online.sai.org.in". The official phone number is 02423-258500. Any other website, mobile number, Google Maps listing or agent claiming to offer official Shirdi bookings is fake. The Sansthan has stated it will take legal action against fraudulent entities.

True. Free darshan at the Samadhi Mandir begins at 6:25 AM daily and needs no fee or donation. The paid darshan pass (Rs.200 per person) is optional and only gives a shorter queue. The Sansthan's Prasadalaya also serves free meals (with a free token). If anyone near the temple asks for a compulsory payment for free darshan, do not pay - it is not a Sansthan rule.
False. Free darshan does not need any ticket or booking. Just join the free queue. Online booking at online.sai.org.in is only for the paid darshan pass, aarti passes and Sansthan rooms. Some third-party websites sell "passes" for free darshan - this is a scam. Book only on the official portal.
Partially true - but the official current time is different. The official Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust daily programme (published at sai.org.in/en/daily-programme, which Dekho Dham verified directly) states: Temple opens at 4:45 AM, Bhupali (devotional singing) begins at 5:00 AM, and Kakad Aarti begins at 5:15 AM. Some older guidebooks and websites mention 4:30 AM or 5:00 AM for the Kakad Aarti - these may have been accurate at different periods when the programme was different. The current official time is 5:15 AM for Kakad Aarti. When in doubt, always check the latest schedule at sai.org.in.
True. Bapusaheb (Gopalrao) Buti, a rich devotee from Nagpur, built a stone wada in Shirdi and planned to keep an idol of Muralidhar (Lord Krishna) in it. The idol was never installed. When Baba left his body on 15 October 1918, his samadhi was placed in this building, and Buti Wada became the Samadhi Mandir. This is recorded in the Sai Satcharita.
Section 3: Rumours and Controversies
अफवाहें और विवाद
Common rumours circulated online, in WhatsApp forwards and in some media - examined with evidence
This claim twists Baba's words and actions. Baba welcomed everyone at Dwarkamai. He said "Allah Malik" and also allowed Hindu worship. He did not ask anyone to leave their own religion. He asked them to follow their own path sincerely and to see that God is one. He never said Hinduism or Islam was wrong. Scholars agree that trying to claim Baba for only one religion goes against what he lived and taught.
This did happen. In June 2014, Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati said Hindus should not worship Sai Baba, and this led to a big public debate. But it was one religious leader's view. It is not the view of all Hindu leaders, and millions of Hindus continue to worship Sai Baba. Some Muslim clerics have also objected to Muslims joining Sai worship. These are minority views on both sides. Dekho Dham reports this debate as fact and takes no side.
This claim originates entirely from Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, who claimed that Shirdi Sai Baba would take a third rebirth as "Prema Sai" in Mandya district, Karnataka. The Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust does not endorse this claim. There is no statement attributed to Shirdi Sai Baba in the Sai Satcharita or any other verified source where he spoke of future rebirths as "Prema Sai." This is Sathya Sai Baba's claim about himself and his own lineage - it is not something Shirdi Sai Baba ever said. Devotees of Shirdi Sai Baba should be aware of this distinction. The Sansthan manages Shirdi's shrine independently of all claims made by the Puttaparthi institution.
False. The official Sansthan website says: "Devotees be beware that (except Tata Sky) other channels' alleged live Darshan are illegal and false, and they and their sponsors are liable for legal action." Do not pay anyone for "official live darshan". For live darshan, use only the Sansthan website (sai.org.in) or its official YouTube channel linked from that website.

Partly true in practice - most visitors today are Hindu and the temple rituals (aarti, abhishek, puja) are Hindu style. But it is not the full picture. In Baba's lifetime both Hindus and Muslims were his devotees, and the Sai Satcharita names many Muslim devotees. The Urs fair began in Shirdi in 1897, and since 1912 the Muslim Urs (Sandal procession) and the Hindu Ram Navami festival have been held together, with Baba's approval. The Sansthan welcomes people of all faiths. The fairest statement: Shirdi is a pilgrimage for all faiths, with mostly Hindu rituals today.
True as a recorded event - it is in the Sai Satcharita (Chapter 44). In 1886 Baba asked Mhalasapati to guard his body for three days. His breathing and pulse stopped, and people thought he had died. Village officials came for an inquiry and wanted to bury the body, but Mhalasapati did not allow it. After three days, at about 3 AM, Baba began breathing again and came back to normal. Whether one sees this as a miracle or a deep meditation (samadhi) is a matter of personal belief.
False. The Sai Satcharita says Baba did ask some visitors for dakshina (an offering), but he gave it all away the same day - to the poor, to devotees and for food. He kept nothing for himself and owned almost nothing. Devotees understand that he asked for dakshina to help people let go of attachment, not because he needed money. Today the Sansthan is one of India's richest temple trusts, but that wealth comes from devotees' donations after Baba's time.
Needs context. Hemadpant (G.R. Dabholkar) first met Baba in 1910 and got Baba's blessing to write his life in 1916. Much of the book was written after 1918, and it was published in 1929, the year Hemadpant died. He recorded many events he saw himself and many he heard from other devotees. It is a devotional book (a life story written with faith), not a modern history book. It is still the most detailed and trusted source on Baba's life and teachings.

Things Sai Baba Never Said - Popular but Unverified Quotes
जो बाबा ने नहीं कहा
Some widely circulated quotes attributed to Sai Baba are not found in the Sai Satcharita or any verified source
Many quotes circulate on WhatsApp and social media attributed to Sai Baba. Some are genuine (found in the Sai Satcharita). Others are inspirational sayings from unknown sources that have been attached to Baba's name. Here is what to check:
| Quote / Claim | Verification Status |
|---|---|
| "Shraddha rakh. Saburi rakh." (Have faith. Have patience.) | TRUE - AUTHENTIC. Found throughout the Sai Satcharita. These are the two words most associated with Baba's teaching. |
| "Sabka Malik Ek." (There is only one Master of all.) | AUTHENTIC IN SPIRIT. Baba often said "Allah Malik" (God is the Master). "Sabka Malik Ek" is the popular Hindi form of this teaching. |
| "Why fear when I am here?" | AUTHENTIC IN SPIRIT. Baba comforted frightened devotees many times in the Satcharita. This short form is one of the Eleven Assurances of Sai Baba shown at Shirdi. |
| "Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?" | NOT VERIFIED as Baba's words. This saying is often attributed to Rumi or other sources and has been attached to Sai Baba's name online. Not found in the Sai Satcharita. |
| "Give food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, clothes to the naked." | CONSISTENT with Baba's teachings and practice - but the exact wording varies. The sentiment is authentic; the specific quote may be paraphrased from various Satcharita passages. |
| "If you look to me, I look to you." | AUTHENTIC. One of the Eleven Assurances of Sai Baba, based on his words in the Satcharita. |
| "I shall be active and vigorous even after leaving this earthly life." | AUTHENTIC. One of the Eleven Assurances of Sai Baba. It reflects his promise that his samadhi would continue to help devotees. |
How to verify a Sai Baba quote: The best way is to search the official Shri Sai Satcharita PDF available free at sai.org.in/en/sai-satcharita. If a quote is genuinely from Baba, it will almost certainly be in the Satcharita. If it is not there, it is either a paraphrase, a composite, or an unverified attribution. The Satcharita is the primary source - not forwards, not YouTube videos, not social media posts.
