Practical Tips for a Smooth Shirdi Visit

शिर्डी यात्रा के लिए व्यावहारिक सुझाव

  • Go early for free darshan: Darshan starts at 6:25 AM. Early morning is usually the calmest time; the queue grows through the day.
  • Thursday planning: If Thursday is your only day, book a paid darshan pass at online.sai.org.in and arrive early. Free darshan queues on Thursdays can take many hours.
  • Complete all five sacred sites: Most pilgrims only visit the Samadhi Mandir. Allow extra time for Dwarkamai (the Dhuni is essential), Lendi Baug (peaceful garden, Nanda Deep), Gurusthan and Chavadi. All five sites are close to each other and can be covered on foot in 2-3 hours.
  • Mobile phones and bags: Mobile phones, cameras and big bags are not allowed inside the Samadhi Mandir. Keep them at the locker counters near the gates. Follow the instructions of Sansthan staff.
  • Dress: Wear decent, traditional clothes; the Sansthan requests devotees to avoid short and revealing clothes. Leave footwear at the shoe counters outside.
  • Overnight stay for double aarti: The ideal Shirdi visit is staying overnight - attend the Shej Aarti at 10 PM and the Kakad Aarti at 5:15 AM the next morning. This covers the beginning and end of Baba's day. Book Sansthan accommodation at online.sai.org.in for the most convenient stay.
  • Free meals: The Sansthan's Prasadalaya serves free meals to all pilgrims. Take a free token from the Sansthan counter first. Eating here is itself seen as Baba's prasad.

शिर्डी साईबाबा दर्शन - अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल

Who was Sai Baba and why do so many people visit Shirdi?

Sai Baba of Shirdi was a saint who lived in Shirdi from around 1858 until he left his body on 15 October 1918. Nobody knows where he was born. He lived in a mosque, kept a sacred fire, fed the hungry, helped the sick, and taught two words above all: Shraddha (faith) and Saburi (patience). His famous saying is "Sabka Malik Ek" - there is only one Master of all. Hindus, Muslims and people of all faiths came to him, and still come to Shirdi today. Read the full story on Page 1.

What are the darshan timings at Shirdi Sai Baba temple?

The temple opens at 4:45 AM and closes after the Shej Aarti at night. Free darshan for all begins at 6:25 AM after the Kakad Aarti. The four aartis are: Kakad Aarti at 5:15 AM (Rs.600 pass), Madhyan Aarti at 12:00 PM (Rs.400), Dhoop Aarti at sunset (Rs.400), and Shej Aarti at 10:00 PM (Rs.400). How do I book a paid darshan pass online?

Go to online.sai.org.in - the ONLY official portal of the Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust. Register with your mobile number, select Darshan Booking, choose the paid darshan pass (Rs.200 per person), select your date and time slot and fill in pilgrim details. Carry the confirmation print or screenshot and the same ID proof on the day of visit. Do NOT book from any other website - the Sansthan has warned specifically about fake booking sites.

How to reach Shirdi from Mumbai?

By train: Vande Bharat Express 22223 from Mumbai CSMT (about 5 hr 20 min, not on Tuesdays) or the daily Fast Passenger 51033 to Sainagar Shirdi. Book on IRCTC. By road: MSRTC and private AC buses run from Mumbai day and night - about 250 km, 5-6 hours. There is no regular direct flight from Mumbai to Shirdi, so train or road is best.

What are the five sacred sites at Shirdi and do I need to visit all of them?

Yes - visiting all five completes the proper Shirdi darshan. The five sites are: Samadhi Mandir (main shrine, Baba's tomb), Dwarkamai (the mosque where Baba lived - see the Dhuni, the sacred fire still burning since his time), Chavadi (where Baba slept on alternate nights), Gurusthan (where Baba was first seen under the neem tree) and Lendi Baug (the garden Baba developed, with the Nanda Deep lamp still burning). Allow 2-3 hours on foot for all five at a comfortable pace. Full description of each site on Page 1.

What is the Dhuni at Dwarkamai and what is Udi?

The Dhuni is the sacred fire that Sai Baba kept burning in Dwarkamai. The Sansthan keeps it burning to this day, and offers rice and ghee to it at 11:30 AM daily. Udi is the sacred ash from this Dhuni. Baba gave Udi to everyone, put it on the foreheads of the sick and told them to mix it in water and drink it. Udi is given as prasad at Shirdi.

Why is Thursday special at Shirdi?

Thursday is considered Sai Baba's most auspicious day - the day of the Guru. It is the day that draws the most pilgrims every week at Shirdi. Devotees come from all over for Thursday darshan. On Thursday night Baba's palkhi (palanquin) is taken in procession to the Chavadi. Queues are very long on Thursdays, so book a paid darshan pass and arrive early.

What is the Punyatithi festival at Shirdi?

Punyatithi is the anniversary of Sai Baba's Mahasamadhi (death) on Vijayadashami (Dussehra), 15 October 1918. Every year on Dussehra, Shirdi celebrates the Punyatithi festival with three days of special programmes, decoration and huge crowds. In 2026, Punyatithi falls on 19-21 October (Vijayadashami on 20 October). It is the biggest annual event at Shirdi. If you plan to attend, book accommodation and travel immediately - the town fills up completely in the days leading up to Punyatithi.

Is there free accommodation and free food at Shirdi?

Food: yes. The Sansthan's Prasadalaya serves free vegetarian meals to all pilgrims. Take a free token from the Sansthan counter first. Stay: Sansthan rooms are not free, but they are low cost - Sai Bhakta Niwas non-AC rooms start at about Rs.200 a day. Book at online.sai.org.in.

What is the Shri Sai Satcharita and where can I get it?

The Shri Sai Satcharita is the primary text of Sai Baba's life - written in Marathi by G.R. Dabholkar (also called Hemadpant), a devotee who first met Baba in 1910. It records Baba's life, leelas and teachings. It is written in verse (ovi) and is read daily by millions of Sai devotees. The Sansthan makes it available free at sai.org.in/en/sai-satcharita. Reading it before visiting Shirdi makes the physical visit far more meaningful.

Which places near Shirdi can I combine in one trip?

The most popular combination is Shirdi with Shani Shingnapur (about 70 km) on the same day. A two-day trip can add Nashik (about 90 km) and Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga (about 115-120 km). A three-day trip can add Ellora Caves and Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga (about 110 km). The Shirdi-Nashik-Trimbakeshwar-Aurangabad-Ellora circuit is one of Maharashtra's finest pilgrimage and heritage routes.

Can Sai Baba be considered a Hindu deity? Can non-Hindus visit Shirdi?

Sai Baba himself never accepted a single label. Nobody knows the religion of his birth. He lived in a mosque, used words like "Allah Malik", allowed Hindu worship and aarti, and taught that "Sabka Malik Ek" - there is only one God, whatever name you use. During his lifetime, both Hindu and Muslim devotees sat with him in equal reverence. Today, Shirdi receives pilgrims of all faiths - Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian and others. There is no restriction on entry at Shirdi based on religion. The Sansthan welcomes all. This openness to all is what makes Shirdi special.
