Last mile to the temple: Madurai Junction railway station is just 1.5 km from the temple. From the station, take an auto-rickshaw (Rs.30-50) or walk through the busy Madurai bazaar streets in about 15 minutes. The temple is in the heart of the old city - parking near the temple is very limited. Use your hotel parking or a paid parking lot and walk or take an auto. On festival days, traffic restrictions apply on the roads around the temple.

The sacred tank inside the temple, with a golden lotus at its centre. Devotees walk around it before darshan. As per the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam, the works of Tamil Sangam poets were judged here on the sacred plank (Sanga Palagai) - only worthy works stayed afloat. The corridors around the tank carry paintings of the Thiruvilaiyadal stories.
Called the Thousand Pillar Hall, it actually has 985 richly carved pillars. It was built in the 16th century (Nayak period) under Ariyanatha Mudaliar. The hall now houses the temple art museum. The famous musical pillars, which give musical notes when tapped, stand just outside this hall.
The palace of King Thirumalai Nayak, built in 1636. The king also added halls such as the Vasantha Mandapam to the Meenakshi temple. The Swarga Vilasam (celestial pavilion) with its great dome and arched corridors blends Dravidian and Islamic styles. A sound and light show is held in the evenings - check timings locally.
Temple of Lord Kallalagar (Vishnu), the brother of Goddess Meenakshi. During the Chithirai festival, Lord Kallalagar is taken in a grand procession from this temple to Madurai. The procession through the Vaigai river is one of the most spectacular events of the Chithirai festival. A must-visit during the festival season.
A vast sacred tank where the float festival (Teppam) is held during Thai month (January-February). The Lord and Goddess are taken on a decorated float around this tank lit with thousands of lamps. A deeply beautiful festival. The tank is one of the largest temple tanks in India.
One of the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan (Kartikeya), carved inside a hill. The rock-cut sanctum is ancient and deeply revered. It is the first of the six abodes, praised in the Sangam work Thirumurugatrupadai, and is where Lord Murugan married Devasena. Many Madurai visitors combine both temples in one day.

Planning around Chithirai festival (April-May): This is the single busiest time at the temple. Accommodation in Madurai books up 3 to 4 months in advance for the festival peak days. If attending, book accommodation as early as possible, arrive at the temple by 5 AM, and expect traffic restrictions on roads near the temple. The procession of Lord Kallalagar entering the Vaigai river is one of the most extraordinary spectacles in Hindu pilgrimage in India.

Thousands of devotees visit every day. Fridays and festivals are much busier.
- Best time to visit: 5 AM to 7 AM on weekdays. Coolest, quietest, and the first pooja (Thiruvanandal) at 5:30 AM is deeply moving.
- Fridays and full moon days: Much busier than regular days. Expect a 2 to 3 hour queue for free darshan. Buy the Rs.50 or Rs.100 special entry ticket.
- Chithirai festival (April-May): Over a million devotees attend. Traffic restrictions apply near the temple. Plan to walk from a distance and arrive before 5 AM on peak days.
- Parking: Very limited parking near the temple. Use your hotel parking or a paid parking lot and walk or take an auto-rickshaw.
- Best months overall: October to March. Cool weather and no major festival crowds (except Navaratri in September-October). Ideal for a first visit.

Who are the main deities at Meenakshi Amman Temple?
Goddess Meenakshi is the principal deity - a form of Parvati, the fish-eyed warrior queen who married Lord Shiva. Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva in his handsome form) is her consort. Both have their own sanctums. By tradition, devotees have darshan of Goddess Meenakshi first and then Lord Sundareswarar - Madurai is known as the city where the Goddess rules.
What are the darshan timings at Meenakshi Amman Temple?
The temple has two sessions daily. Morning: 5:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Evening: 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The temple is closed from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM for midday ritual preparations. Is darshan free at Meenakshi Amman Temple?

What is the Chithirai festival at Meenakshi Temple?
The Chithirai festival is the grandest festival at Meenakshi Temple, held in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April-May). Its highlights are Meenakshi's coronation as queen of Madurai (Pattabhishekam), the divine wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar (Thirukalyanam), and the chariot festival. As per tradition, Lord Kallalagar (Vishnu, Meenakshi's brother) sets out from Azhagar Kovil, 21 km away, to attend the wedding but arrives after it is over. In the Shakta tradition, Goddess Meenakshi is revered as Raja Matangi (Shyamala), and many devotees honour Madurai as a Shakti Peetha. However, it does not appear in every traditional list of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The name Meenakshi means "she with fish-shaped eyes." The temple is also one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - the sacred Shiva temples praised in the Tevaram hymns of the Nayanmar saints.

The 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM window on weekdays is the quietest and most peaceful. The weather in Madurai is best from October to March - cool and comfortable. Avoid Fridays and full moon days if you want smaller crowds. The Chithirai festival (April-May) is the most spiritually powerful time but also the most crowded. Navaratri (September-October) is also very popular.
Can non-Hindus visit Meenakshi Amman Temple?
Yes, non-Hindus can visit the outer corridors and halls, including the Thousand Pillar Hall and the golden lotus tank. Only Hindus may enter the sanctums of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the temple.

The Palliyarai Pooja is the final pooja of the night, performed from 9:30 PM to 10:00 PM. "Palliyarai" means "bedchamber" - this is the ritual in which Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi are symbolically put to sleep together in the inner chamber. The Lord's processional idol is taken from his sanctum to the Goddess's bedchamber (Palliyarai) with great ceremony. This is considered deeply auspicious to witness - it represents the eternal divine union of Shiva and Shakti. The temple closes at 10:00 PM after this pooja.
