Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in the heart of Madurai is one of the greatest living temples in the world. Goddess Meenakshi - the fish-eyed form of Adi Parashakti - rules this city with Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva) as her consort. Spread over about 14 acres with 14 towering gopurams, the Goddess temple here is mentioned in Tamil texts from the 6th century CE, and Madurai itself is praised in Sangam literature. The divine story of Goddess Meenakshi - from the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam and Skanda Purana
The story of Goddess Meenakshi is preserved in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (authored by Paranjothi Munivar, drawing from the Sanskrit Halasya Mahatmyam), the Skanda Purana (Tatva Samhita section on the Pandya kingdom), and the Lalita Sahasranama of the Brahmanda Purana.
The birth of Goddess Meenakshi is described in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. King Malayadhvaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamala performed a great yajna (fire ritual) praying for a child to succeed the king. From the sacred flames emerged a three-year-old girl - fully adorned, bearing divine marks. She had three breasts. A divine voice from the sky said: "Raise this child as your own. When she meets her true consort, the third breast will disappear." The king named her Thadathagai. Because of her beautiful fish-shaped eyes, she is worshipped as Meenakshi. She grew up to be a fearless warrior queen and led her armies in a digvijaya (conquest of all directions), subduing kings, asuras and even the gods. When she reached Mount Kailash to conquer Lord Shiva himself, she saw him, was stunned by his beauty, and her third breast disappeared. The divine promise was fulfilled. Lord Shiva came to Madurai as the handsome youth Sundareswarar, and their celestial wedding - Meenakshi Thirukalyanam - was witnessed by all the gods. Lord Vishnu himself gave the hand of Meenakshi to Sundareswarar. This divine wedding is reenacted every year as the Chithirai Thirukalyanam festival.
Meaning of the name: Meenakshi means "she whose eyes (akshi) are like fish (meena)". Just as a fish never closes its eyes, the Goddess is believed to watch over her devotees without rest. In the Shakta tradition, Goddess Meenakshi is also revered as Raja Matangi (Shyamala), and many devotees honour Madurai as a Shakti Peetha, though it does not appear in every traditional list of the 51 Peethas.

Darshan Options and How to Book
- Free darshan: Join the regular queue at any of the four gopuram gates. Can be 1 to 3 hours on busy days.
- Special entry (Rs.50): Special queue to one sanctum - Meenakshi Amman or Sundareswarar. Buy the ticket at the counter inside the temple. Shorter queue.
- Special entry, both sanctums (Rs.100): Special queue to both the Meenakshi Amman and Sundareswarar sanctums. Recommended for senior citizens and families.
- Online pooja booking: Abhishekam, Kalyanam, Archana and other services bookable at maduraimeenakshi.hrce.tn.gov.in (Online Booking Services of the Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department).
For senior citizens: The temple administration provides a special entrance for physically and mentally challenged, aged and terminally ill devotees who are unable to walk or stand in the regular queue. This gives direct access to both the Meenakshi Amman sanctum and the Sundareswarar sanctum through a special entrance. Inform the temple staff at the entrance. Carry a wheelchair or ask for one at the gate. Go before 7 AM for the most comfortable experience.

Mobile phones and cameras: Since March 2018, following an order of the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench), devotees cannot carry mobile phones or cameras inside the temple. Deposit them at the counters outside the gates before entering. Photography inside the temple is therefore not possible for visitors.
