How to Reach Tirupati and Tirumala

Important - Ghat road restriction: All vehicles and buses on the ghat road between Tirupati and Tirumala are banned from 12:00 AM to 3:00 AM daily. Plan your journey accordingly. If your vehicle breaks down on the ghat road, call TTD Automobile Clinic: 0877-2263636. A mechanic van is sent free of charge.
The Sacred Footpaths - Alipiri and Srivari Mettu

Climbing on foot gives Divya Darshan - free, priority, queue-free darshan at Tirumala
The Varaha Purana says every step taken on the footpath towards Lord Venkateswara destroys one sin. Millions of devotees walk the footpath every year as a fulfilment of a vow (mannat). TTD provides free facilities throughout both paths.
Starts at Alipiri, at the foot of the Tirumala hills in Tirupati city. About 3,550 stone steps. Well-lit, with resting points, free food stalls, drinking water, toilets, medical help and TTD security throughout. Average walking time: 3 to 5 hours depending on pace. Free luggage transfer to Tirumala for walkers. Devotees get Divya Darshan (free, priority, no queue) on arrival at Tirumala. Not recommended for senior citizens with knee or heart conditions.
Starts from Chandragiri (about 10 km from Tirupati city). Only 6 km long but steeper. Less crowded than Alipiri. Also gives Divya Darshan at Tirumala. Facilities similar to Alipiri - rest houses, water, food and medical along the path.
For first-time visitors or families with seniors: Take the TTD bus from Tirupati to Tirumala and book the SSD (Rs.300) or Sr. Citizen darshan. The footpath is a deeply spiritual experience but requires physical fitness. If you have knee pain, heart conditions or are above 70, the bus is the right choice. The darshan is equally sacred either way - Lord Venkateswara makes no distinction.
Places to Visit Near Tirumala and Tirupati

Temple of Goddess Padmavathi - the divine consort of Lord Venkateswara. The Brahmanda Purana says: "One who sees Padmavathi first and then Venkateswara gets the full fruit of the yatra." Most pilgrims visit Tiruchanoor before going up to Tirumala. Special Entry Darshan tickets (Rs.200) available at ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in.
A sacred waterfall on the Tirumala hills. The Varaha Purana says this water is as sacred as the Ganga itself. Devotees take a ritual bath here before darshan. The water flows year-round from a natural spring hidden in the rocks.
A serene lake and waterfall on the hills. "Papavinasanam" means the one that destroys sins. A bath here is said to cleanse the devotee of all sins accumulated in past lifetimes. Cool, peaceful spot away from the main temple crowds.
A sacred waterfall where sage Jabali is said to have performed penance. The Skanda Purana mentions this spot as one of the holy theerthams of the Seshachalam range. A peaceful place for meditation and prayer.
An ancient Vishnu temple in Tirupati city, also managed by TTD. The presiding deity is Lord Govindaraja (Vishnu reclining on Adisesha). Many devotees visit this temple in the morning before going up to Tirumala.
A 16th-century fort of the Vijayanagara kings, from where the original land grant to the Tirumala temple was issued by King Sri Krishnadevaraya. The Srivari Mettu footpath starts near Chandragiri. A son et lumiere show runs in the evenings.

TTD runs guest houses at Tirumala - the only accommodation on the hill itself
TTD operates a large number of guest houses and cottages at Tirumala and in Tirupati city. These are the most sought-after stays because they are right at the temple. Book at ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in. Quota released monthly along with darshan tickets - they fill up extremely fast.

All food near the temple is pure vegetarian. The TTD runs its own Anna Prasadam hall at Tirumala where free meals are served to all pilgrims round the clock. TTD canteens on the footpaths also give free food and water to walkers. The famous TTD Laddu Prasadam (the official prasadam of Lord Venkateswara) is available only at the temple and can be bought at the prasadam counters - it is not available anywhere outside Tirumala.

Live Traffic and Crowd Tips

Tirumala receives 50,000 to 1,00,000 devotees daily. Sarva Darshan queue can be 10-20 hours.
- Book SSD (Rs.300) or Sr. Citizen darshan in advance: The Sarva Darshan (free) queue often takes 10 to 24 hours on weekends and festival days. Always book the SSD ticket or Sr. Citizen darshan before you travel.
- Avoid Brahmotsavam (Sep-Oct): The annual Brahmotsavam festival (usually September-October, 9 days) draws the largest crowds of the year. SSD and accommodation quotas sell out months in advance. If this is your first visit, choose November to January instead.
- Weekdays vs weekends: Monday to Thursday are significantly less crowded than Friday to Sunday. If you can visit mid-week, the wait time is much shorter.
- Ghat road congestion: On peak days, the road from Tirupati to Tirumala can have a 4 to 6 hour traffic jam. Take the TTD bus from the Alipiri bus stand in Tirupati - buses have a separate lane and are usually faster.
- Best months: November to February. Weather is cool and pleasant on the hills. Crowds are moderate. November to January is the sweet spot for a comfortable first visit.

Devotees donate to repay Lord Venkateswara's loan from Kubera - the scriptural reason for donations
According to the Varaha Purana, Lord Venkateswara took a huge loan from Kubera (the god of wealth) to fund his divine wedding with Goddess Padmavathi. He promised to repay it with the donations of his devotees until the end of the Kali Yuga. This is why devotees donate to the Hundi (the large donation box in the sanctum) - it is not charity, it is a scriptural act of participating in the Lord's debt repayment. TTD is the wealthiest temple trust in the world as a result.

What is the difference between Sarva Darshan, SSD and Divya Darshan?
Sarva Darshan is free for all devotees but involves a very long queue - often 10 to 24 hours on busy days. SSD (Special Entry Darshan / Seeghra Darshan) costs Rs.300 per person and gives a much shorter, faster queue - book online in advance at ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in. Divya Darshan is free and gives priority entry - it is available only to devotees who climb the hill on foot via the Alipiri (11 km) or Srivari Mettu (6 km) footpaths. How do I book the SSD (Rs.300) Tirupati darshan ticket?
Go to ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, log in or register, then select Darshan and Special Entry Darshan (Rs.300). The quota for each month is released around the 24th of the previous month (for example, December quota is released around September 24). The tickets fill up within minutes of release. Set a reminder and book as soon as the quota opens.
Is there a free darshan option for senior citizens at Tirumala?
Yes. TTD provides free darshan for senior citizens aged 65 and above, differently abled devotees (with government certificate) and certain medical cases. This darshan takes place at the Sampangi Prakaram entry point, Monday to Saturday at 3:00 PM. Quota is 1,000 per day. Only your spouse can accompany you as attendant. Aadhaar card is mandatory. Book at ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in in advance as the quota fills quickly.
How far is Tirumala from Tirupati and how do I get there?
Tirumala temple is 26 km from Tirupati city by road, up the Seshachalam hills. The most common way is to take the TTD bus from Alipiri bus stand in Tirupati - buses leave every 2 minutes and are free. Private taxis and autos are also available. The ghat road is banned for vehicles from 12 AM to 3 AM. Direct buses to Tirumala also run from Chennai, Bengaluru and Vellore. On foot, the Alipiri footpath (11 km) or Srivari Mettu footpath (6 km) gives priority Divya Darshan on arrival.
What is the official dress code at Tirumala Tirupati temple?

November to January is the best period - weather is cool and crowds are moderate. Within a week, Monday to Thursday is significantly less busy than Friday to Sunday. Avoid Brahmotsavam (usually September-October, 9 days) and Vaikunta Ekadasi (December) when crowds are at their peak. On a typical weekday in November, the SSD Rs.300 queue takes 2 to 4 hours. On a Brahmotsavam Friday, even the SSD queue can take 6 to 8 hours.

What is the Alipiri footpath and is it suitable for elderly devotees?
The Alipiri footpath is an 11 km stone-step path from the foot of the Tirumala hills (Alipiri) to the top. It has about 3,550 steps and takes 3 to 5 hours for most walkers. TTD provides free rest houses, canteens, drinking water, toilets, medical help, piped devotional music and luggage transfer throughout. Devotees who walk get Divya Darshan (free, priority entry at Tirumala). However, it is not recommended for devotees with knee pain, heart conditions or those above 70. For them, the TTD bus with a Sr. Citizen darshan booking is the better and equally sacred option.

What is the famous Tirupati Laddu Prasadam? Can I buy it outside the temple?
The TTD Laddu is the official prasadam of Lord Venkateswara - a large sweet laddu made at the temple using a closely guarded recipe. It has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Government of India and cannot legally be made or sold by anyone else. It is available only at the official prasadam counters at Tirumala. There are two types - the smaller one given free to SSD ticket holders and the larger one sold at a nominal price. Any "Tirupati Laddu" sold outside is not the original.
What is Brahmotsavam at Tirumala and when does it happen?
Brahmotsavam is the grandest annual festival at Tirumala Venkateswara temple. It lasts 9 days and is usually celebrated in September-October (coinciding with Navratri). During Brahmotsavam, the Lord is taken in procession on different vahanams (divine vehicles) each day - Garuda, Hanumantha, Gaja (elephant), Surya Prabha (chariot) and others. Millions of pilgrims visit during this period. All darshan and accommodation quotas are released separately for Brahmotsavam and fill up months in advance. Should I visit Padmavathi Temple at Tiruchanoor before going to Tirumala?
Yes - by tradition and scriptural recommendation. The Brahmanda Purana says a devotee who sees Goddess Padmavathi first and then Lord Venkateswara gets the complete fruit of the Tirupati yatra. Tiruchanoor is about 5 km from Tirupati city and is on the way from the railway station for many visitors. TTD also sells Special Entry Darshan tickets (Rs.200) for Padmavathi Temple at ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in.
Is it true that the idol of Lord Venkateswara is self-manifested (swayambhu)?
Yes. The TTD website and the Puranas it cites (Varaha Purana, Padma Purana) describe the main idol of Lord Venkateswara as swayambhu - self-manifested, not carved or installed by any human. This is part of why Tirumala is considered uniquely sacred. The Lingam at Kashi Vishwanath and the idol at Tirumala are both described as swayambhu in their respective scriptures, placing them among the highest order of sacred sites in Sanatan Dharma.
