Navratri at Vaishno Devi - The Most Sacred Season

नवरात्रि - माता रानी के नौ दिन

Two Navratris every year. October Navratri (Shardiya) is the biggest. Plan months in advance.

Vaishno Devi is especially auspicious during the two Navratri seasons - Chaitra Navratri (March-April) and Shardiya Navratri (September-October). During Navratri, lakhs of devotees arrive at Katra every single day. The air in Katra and on the entire yatra route fills with "Jai Mata Di" chants. It is the most powerful and most crowded time to visit.

Navratri2026 / 2027 DatesNotes
Shardiya Navratri 202611 to 20 October 2026The most important Navratri at Vaishno Devi. Starts Pratipada (Ghatasthapana) on 11 October, Vijayadashami (Dussehra) on 20 October 2026. See our Navratri 2026 guide and Ghatasthapana vidhi. Peak pilgrimage season. 1 to 2 lakh devotees per day. All hotels in Katra fully booked 2 to 3 months in advance.
Chaitra Navratri 20277 to 15 April 2027 (Ram Navami 15 April)Spring Navratri. Less crowded than October but still very busy. Many North Indian and Punjabi families prefer Chaitra Navratri yatra.
Ashtami / Navami (peak)18-19 October 2026 (Shardiya, Day 8 Mahagauri)The 8th and 9th days of Navratri. The single most crowded 48 hours of the year at Vaishno Devi. Darshan queue can be 15 to 20 hours long. Helicopter books up weeks in advance.

Navratri planning - book everything early: If you plan to visit during Navratri, book your train tickets 2 to 3 months in advance (especially Vande Bharat). Hotel rooms in Katra book up completely - reserve at least 2 months before. Helicopter tickets sell out in days once released. Register your Yatra Parchi online before you leave home. During Ashtami and Navami, the darshan queue can be 15 to 20 hours. If this is your first visit, consider coming in the first 3 days of Navratri (less crowded than the last 2 days) or visit outside Navratri entirely for a more peaceful experience.

Best Time to Visit Vaishno Devi

कब जाएं - सबसे अच्छा समय

Vaishno Devi is open 24 hours, 365 days. Every season has its own experience.

Navratri (Oct, April)Very HighMost auspicious. Entire route filled with chants and lamps. Bhawan lit beautifully. But queues of 10-20 hours possible. Book everything months in advance.
Summer (March-June)ModeratePleasant weather. Good for families. School holidays (May-June) bring families from Delhi, Punjab. Book in advance for May-June but manageable.
Monsoon (July-Sept)LowThe yatra route can be slippery and beautiful. Rain makes the Trikuta hills green and misty. However, the Shrine Board can suspend the yatra on heavy rain days (a deadly landslide near Ardhkuwari in August 2025 led to a long suspension) - check maavaishnodevi.org before travelling in monsoon months.
Winter (Nov-Feb)LowThe most peaceful time. Snow on the higher sections in December-January. Bhawan can be near-freezing. Carry warm clothing. The trek in snow is an unforgettable experience for those who can manage the cold. Darshan queues: 1 to 2 hours only.

Live Crowd and Practical Tips

भीड़ और सुझाव

Vaishno Devi receives 1 crore+ pilgrims every year. Know when to go and what to expect.

  • Best time within the day: Start the trek from Katra between midnight and 3 AM. Arrive at Bhawan before the morning Attka Aarti begins at ~6:20 AM. This is the quietest time on the route and you can attend the most sacred aarti.
  • Navratri Ashtami/Navami: The 8th and 9th nights of Navratri (18-19 October 2026) are the single busiest 48 hours of the year. Darshan queues can reach 15 to 20 hours. Start from Katra at 10 PM the night before to complete darshan by early morning.
  • Monsoon caution: July to September is beautiful but the Shrine Board can suspend the yatra on heavy rain days without advance notice. Always check maavaishnodevi.org before travelling in monsoon months.
  • For senior citizens: Take an early helicopter (service from ~8:30 AM) from Katra to Sanjhichhat, walk or take a pony to Bhawan (mostly downhill), take the ropeway to Bhairon Baba, then pony or battery car back to Katra. The entire yatra can be completed in 5 to 6 hours with this combination.
  • RFID time rule: Begin the trek within 12 hours of collecting your RFID card and return to Katra within 24 hours (in force since December 2025).
  • Do not buy from agents: The Shrine Board does not authorise any agent for Yatra Parchi, helicopter or room booking. All bookings are done only at maavaishnodevi.org or at official Shrine Board counters in Katra. Agents selling fake passes are present near Katra - ignore them.

Frequently Asked Questions

माता वैष्णो देवी यात्रा - अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

What is the Yatra Parchi and is it mandatory?

Yes, the Yatra Parchi (RFID Yatra Access Card) is mandatory for every pilgrim. It is a free registration system managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Without it, you cannot pass the Darshani Deori gate at Katra. Register online at maavaishnodevi.org before you leave home, or at the walk-in counter at Katra. Registered pilgrims are covered by the Shrine Board's accident insurance (raised to Rs.10 lakh per person in 2026 as per news reports). Start the trek within 12 hours of collecting the RFID card and return within 24 hours. See the step-by-step registration guide on Page 2.

How far is the trek from Katra to Bhawan? How many hours does it take?

The Old Track (most used route) is 13 km from Katra to the Bhawan (official SMVDSB distance). Uphill: 5 to 8 hours depending on fitness and pace. Descent: 3 to 5 hours. The Tarakote Marg (opened 2018) is of comparable length with gentler gradients and no ponies. From Ardhkuwari (6 km from Katra), battery cars can take you to the Bhawan. A helicopter from Katra to Sanjhichhat (8 minutes) reduces the remaining walk to about 2.5-3.5 km, mostly downhill. Full trek guide on Page 3.

How do I reach Katra from Delhi?

The best option is the Vande Bharat Express (22439/22440) from New Delhi to SVDK Katra station - 8 hours, runs 6 days/week. The station is 1.4 km from the yatra gate. By air: fly to Jammu (IXJ), 50 km from Katra by taxi (1 to 1.5 hours). By road: ~685 km via NH-44, 12 to 14 hours. JKSRTC and private overnight buses also run from Delhi (ISBT Kashmiri Gate) to Katra.

What are the helicopter fares and how do I book?

The helicopter operates from Katra Helipad to Sanjhichhat Helipad. Duration: ~8 minutes. One-way fare: Rs.2,320 per person, two-way Rs.4,640 (till 31 October 2026); from 1 November 2026: Rs.2,700 one-way and Rs.5,400 two-way. Service starts at 8:30 AM (weather permitting). Book at maavaishnodevi.org - the official Shrine Board portal. After landing at Sanjhichhat, you still need to walk or take a pony to the Bhawan - roughly 2.5-3.5 km, mostly downhill. Full helicopter guide on Page 2.

Why is the Bhairon Baba darshan mandatory?

Mata Vaishno Devi herself blessed Bhairon Nath after beheading him and commanded: "Every devotee who visits my Bhawan must also visit your temple. Only then is the yatra complete." Bhairon Baba Temple is 1.5 km uphill from the Bhawan (or a few minutes by ropeway at about Rs.100). Pilgrims who return to Katra without visiting Bhairon Baba are considered to have completed only half their yatra. The ropeway makes this very easy for senior citizens and those who have already trekked 13 km. More on Page 3.

When is the best time to visit Vaishno Devi?

For a peaceful first visit: January-February (cold but very few crowds, darshan queue 1 to 2 hours). For an auspicious visit with the spiritual energy of Navratri: first 3 days of Chaitra (April) or Shardiya Navratri (October) rather than the last 2 days when crowds peak. For summer: March-June is pleasant. Avoid heavy monsoon months (July-August) due to possible yatra suspension on rain days.

What is the Attka Aarti and how do I get a pass?

The Attka Aarti is the twice-daily aarti performed directly in front of the three Pindies inside the Holy Cave - at sunrise and sunset. All gods and goddesses are believed to be present during this aarti. Regular darshan is paused for ~2 hours during each aarti. Morning timing: ~6:20 AM to 8:00 AM. Evening: ~7:20 PM (summer) or ~6:20 PM (winter). Book the Attka Aarti pass online at maavaishnodevi.org. Passes are limited - book well in advance for Navratri. Full aarti guide on Page 1.

What are the three Pindies? What do they represent?

The three Pindies are natural rock formations inside the Holy Cave - five-and-a-half feet tall with three naturally distinct peaks. They are not carved or sculpted by human hands. They represent: Mahakali (right Pindi) - the power of time and dissolution; Mahalakshmi (centre Pindi) - the power of grace and sustenance; Mahasaraswati (left Pindi) - the power of knowledge and creation. Together, the three Pindies are Mata Vaishno Devi - the complete Tridevi in one presence. Photography is not permitted in front of the Pindies. Full story on Page 1.

Can senior citizens do the Vaishno Devi yatra?

Yes, absolutely - with the right planning. Use the helicopter from Katra to Sanjhichhat (8 minutes, Rs.2,320 one way till 31 October 2026, Rs.2,700 from 1 November 2026). From Sanjhichhat, take a pony to the Bhawan (mostly downhill). After main darshan, take the ropeway (Rs.100) to Bhairon Baba Temple. Take pony or battery car back to Ardhkuwari, then walk the easier downhill section to Katra. Many devotees in their 70s and 80s complete the yatra this way comfortably. The entire yatra takes 5 to 6 hours with helicopter and pony. Consult a doctor if you have heart, knee or high-altitude concerns.

What is Ardhkuwari and what is Garbh Joon?

Ardhkuwari is the halfway point of the trek, 6 km from Katra. This is where Mata Vaishnavi hid in a cave and meditated for 9 months while Bhairon Nath searched for her. The cave is called Garbh Joon - "womb cave." The narrow passage is just wide enough to crawl through on hands and knees. Emerging from the other side is described by devotees as a second birth - symbolically being reborn with Mata Rani's blessings. For those who are claustrophobic, there is a bypass path. Ardhkuwari has the Shrine Board's best rest facilities - rooms, dormitories, langar and medical aid. Full trek guide on Page 3.

Is Vaishno Devi open in winter? What is it like?

Yes. Vaishno Devi is open 24 hours, 365 days, including all winters. In December-January, temperatures at the Bhawan can drop to near-freezing or below. There may be snow on the path above Ardhkuwari. The Shrine Board provides blankets at Bhawan. The trek in snow is beautiful and spiritually powerful but cold. Carry warm layers, gloves and a windproof jacket. Crowds are minimal in winter - darshan queues of just 1 to 2 hours. Winter is the best time for a peaceful, unhurried yatra.

What facilities are available on the yatra route?

The Shrine Board maintains comprehensive facilities throughout the route: free community kitchens (langar) at Tarakote Marg, Sanjhichhat and Bhairon Ji complex; medical aid camps at Banganga, Ardhkuwari, Sanjhichhat and Bhawan; rest areas with seating throughout; cloak rooms and lockers at Ardhkuwari and Bhawan; ATMs at Ardhkuwari and Bhawan; blanket service at Bhawan; and RFID-based pilgrim tracking for safety. The yatra route is well-lit throughout and safe for night trekking.

Can I visit other places near Katra and Vaishno Devi?

Yes. Jammu city (~50 km from Katra) has several important temples including Raghunath Temple, Ranbireshwar Temple and Bahu Fort Temple. Patnitop (110 km) is a beautiful hill station and a refreshing addition to the yatra trip. Srinagar can be reached by the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express (inaugurated June 2025, about 3 hours via the Chenab rail bridge). Some pilgrims combine the Vaishno Devi yatra with a Kashmir valley trip. Shiv Khori Temple (77 km from Katra) is a natural cave Shiva shrine that many combine with the Vaishno Devi yatra.
