About This Temple

Every year, the first honour in Pune's Ganeshotsav procession, called the maanacha ganpati, is given to Kasba Ganpati before any other idol in the city.

History and Puranic Background

Local tradition holds that the idol here is swayambhu and was found on the grounds of the Lal Mahal area of Pune, during the time Jijabai, mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, managed the family estate. A small shrine was raised around the idol, and over the following centuries it grew into the present temple, believed to date to around 1636.

Because Kasba Ganpati was worshipped by the Bhosale family before Shivaji Maharaj began his campaigns for Swarajya, the temple is closely tied to Maharashtra's history as much as its devotion. Pune's city administration and its most important public functions have traditionally sought blessings here first.

No Purana devotes a chapter to this particular idol, since its story belongs to seventeenth-century Maratha history rather than ancient scripture. Sumukhaschaikadantascha kapilo gajakarnakah, Lambodarascha vikato vighnanasho ganadhipah, Herambascha tatha skandapurvajo bhalachandramah, Gajanano dvadashaitani namani yah pathet shrunuyadapi.
